Why People Fail the AWS SAA-C03 Exam — and How to Pass

AWS doesn't publish an SAA-C03 pass rate. Learn how the 720 scaled score works, why candidates fail, and a domain-weighted plan to pass.

Learner at a desk studying several cloud architecture sketches on a whiteboard

The AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03) exam is a design test, not a memory test. Preparing for the wrong kind of test is one of the most avoidable ways to fail it. Many questions ask you to choose the architecture that best fits the stated requirements. To pass, study by the official domain weights, practice reading requirements under time pressure, and book only when timed practice shows you’re consistently ready. This guide covers how SAA-C03 is actually scored, the mistakes that cost people a pass, and a plan to avoid them.

The facts below come from AWS’s exam page, exam guide and certification policies, checked on October 8, 2026. Study advice is EvolveSkill’s guidance and is labeled as such.

Chapter 1: Know the Exam You’re Taking (SAA-C03)

SAA-C03 is the current version of the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate exam. At our last check, AWS had not announced a successor or a retirement date for it, and it was not listed on AWS’s exam-updates page. One language change is confirmed: the exam in Italian will be retired after December 31, 2026.

Recommended experienceAt least 1 year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions that use AWS services

The recommended experience is a recommendation, not a prerequisite. AWS suggests that people without IT work experience earn AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner first, and states that all AWS Certifications may be earned without completing specific prerequisites. If you are still deciding whether this is the right first AWS exam, see our guide on which AWS certification to start with (opens in a new tab).

What the exam is testing

According to AWS’s exam guide, SAA-C03 validates your ability to design solutions based on the AWS Well-Architected Framework: to design architectures that are secure, resilient, high-performing and cost-optimized, and to review existing solutions and determine improvements. That’s the clue to how people fail. The exam rarely asks what a service is. It asks which design fits a set of requirements best.

Chapter 2: How SAA-C03 Is Scored — and What Pass-Rate Claims Really Mean

About the “40% fail” figure

You may have seen the claim that about 40% of candidates fail SAA-C03, including in an earlier version of this page. AWS does not publish a pass rate or fail rate for SAA-C03. We found none on the exam page, in the exam guide or in AWS’s certification policies. The third-party figures we reviewed varied and did not provide a consistent, authoritative methodology.

So treat any SAA-C03 pass or fail percentage as an unverified estimate. It can’t tell you your own chances. Your practice results can.

What a 720 score means

Your result is a scaled score from 100 to 1,000, and you need 720 to pass. A scaled score is not a percentage of questions answered correctly, so 720 doesn’t mean “72% right.” AWS explains that scaled scoring equates results across exam forms that might differ slightly in difficulty.

Three more rules from the exam guide shape your strategy:

  • Only 50 questions count. The exam has 15 unscored questions that AWS uses to evaluate future questions. They aren’t identified, so treat every question as if it counts.
  • You pass on the whole exam. SAA-C03 uses a compensatory scoring model. You don’t need a passing score in each domain, only overall.
  • Blank answers are wrong; guesses aren’t penalized. Unanswered questions are scored as incorrect, and there’s no penalty for guessing. Never leave a question blank.

Why “you can miss X questions” doesn’t hold

Some prep sites say you can get a fixed number of questions wrong and still pass. The official scoring model doesn’t support that. With 15 unscored questions you can’t identify, and scaled scores that are equated across exam forms, there’s no published number of misses that ensures a pass. Aim for consistent, comfortable practice results instead of a target number of misses.

Chapter 3: Why Candidates Fail SAA-C03

This chapter is EvolveSkill guidance, not AWS data. It’s built from the official exam guide and common patterns in how SAA-C03 questions are written. It describes avoidable mistakes, not how often they happen.

Mistake 1: Studying service facts instead of design decisions

The mistake
Memorizing what each service does and its limits, then expecting the exam to ask about them directly.
Why it happens
Video courses and flashcards make features easy to review, so recall feels like progress.
The fix
For every service you study, practice the decision: when would you choose it over its closest alternative, and which requirement would make you switch? Tie each answer back to the four exam domains.

Mistake 2: Skimming past the requirement words

The mistake
Picking an answer that works without checking every requirement in the question.
Why it happens
Under time pressure, the first workable design looks correct, and the distractors are plausible by design.
The fix
Before you look at the options, name the deciding requirement in the question (cost, resilience, performance, security or operational effort). Then remove each option that fails any stated requirement.

Mistake 3: Spending study time evenly

The mistake
Giving every topic equal time, or the most time to the topics you enjoy.
Why it happens
Course chapters are similar lengths, so time follows the syllabus rather than the weights.
The fix
Plan by the official weights in Chapter 4. Design Secure Architectures alone is 30% of scored content.

Mistake 4: Preparing without hands-on practice

The mistake
Preparing only from reading and videos.
Why it happens
Building things takes longer than watching, and costs can feel uncertain.
The fix
AWS recommends at least a year of hands-on design experience. If you have less, build small architectures yourself so you’ve seen how the services fit together. Clean up resources when you finish, and check your costs.

Mistake 5: Studying the wrong scope

The mistake
Spending time on services the exam doesn’t cover, or missing ones it does.
Why it happens
Third-party material isn’t always aligned to the current exam.
The fix
Use AWS’s own In-Scope AWS Services and Out-of-Scope AWS Services lists in the SAA-C03 exam guide as your checklist.

Mistake 6: Booking on a date instead of on readiness

The mistake
Choosing an exam date first, then hoping preparation catches up.
Why it happens
A fixed date feels motivating, and rescheduling feels like failure.
The fix
Book when the readiness signals in Chapter 6 are steady. AWS lets you reschedule up to 24 hours before your appointment, up to two times, so a date isn’t a trap if you watch the deadlines.

Chapter 4: Build a Domain-Weighted Study Plan

The four domains and their weights

The four domains and their weights
DomainWeight
Design Secure Architectures30%
Design Resilient Architectures26%
Design High-Performing Architectures24%
Design Cost-Optimized Architectures20%

These weights are from AWS’s exam guide and describe the share of scored content.

Turn the weights into a plan

  1. Read the full exam guide, including each domain’s task statements.
  2. Take a baseline set of practice questions before studying, so your plan starts from your real gaps.
  3. Study one domain at a time, using the in-scope services list as your checklist.
  4. After each domain, practice scenario questions and write down why each wrong option was wrong.
  5. Finish with full-length, timed practice.

This plan is specific to SAA-C03. For a vendor-wide approach to building a study schedule and using practice questions, see our AWS exam preparation guide (opens in a new tab).

Chapter 5: Practice the Way the Exam Asks

AWS lists official preparation resources on the SAA-C03 exam page. They include the AWS Skill Builder exam prep plan, the AWS Certification Official Practice Question Set, the Official Practice Exam, and hands-on options such as AWS Builder Labs, AWS Cloud Quest, AWS Jam, AWS SimuLearn and AWS Escape Room. Check each resource’s current access and pricing on AWS Skill Builder.

Practice under exam conditions

  • Pace: 65 questions in 130 minutes works out to about 2 minutes per question. Practice at that pace so the real exam doesn’t feel rushed.
  • Review every wrong answer: for each one, note which requirement you missed or which service you confused.
  • Learn the service names: AWS provides a list of short and full service names through the Help button in the exam. You can review that list before your exam.

Use only legitimate practice material. AWS states that accessing “brain dumps” (improperly disclosed real exam questions), even unintentionally, violates the AWS Certification Program Agreement. Dumps also train recall, not the design reasoning the exam tests.

Chapter 6: Know When You’re Ready

AWS doesn’t publish a “ready” threshold, so these signals are EvolveSkill guidance:

  • Your full-length, timed practice scores are consistently comfortable, not one lucky high score.
  • You can explain why each wrong option is wrong, not just which option is right.
  • No domain is a consistent weak spot in your practice results.
  • You finish timed practice with time left to review flagged questions.

If one domain keeps dragging your results down, give it more focused study before booking. Under the compensatory scoring model you don’t need to pass each domain separately, but a large gap still costs points overall.

What about a target practice score?

AWS doesn’t publish a practice-score target, and it doesn’t say how practice results convert to the 100–1,000 scaled score. Practice tests from different providers differ in difficulty and style, so a score on one set isn’t a prediction of your exam result. Fixed percentage rules of thumb you may see online are third-party opinions, not AWS guidance.

This is EvolveSkill’s guidance: track your own results across several sets of questions you haven’t seen, watch the trend in each domain, and book when results are steady and you can explain your answers. One high score on one set is not a booking signal.

Chapter 7: Book and Sit the Exam

Scheduling and exam rules

You can take SAA-C03 at a Pearson VUE testing center or as an online proctored exam. If you take the exam in English and English isn’t your native language, AWS allows you to request an additional 30 minutes.

According to AWS’s policies:

  • You can reschedule up to 24 hours before your appointment, and each appointment can be rescheduled only twice.
  • Canceling less than 24 hours before your appointment means you forfeit the exam fee.
  • Exam voucher expiration dates can’t be extended, so check your voucher’s expiry before you change a booking.

Once your readiness signals are steady and you’re ready to book, confirm that any exam voucher you buy is for SAA-C03 and that you can sit the exam before the voucher expires. EvolveSkill’s product page lists its voucher’s exam version, validity and terms.

Exam-day approach

  • Answer every question. Blank answers score as incorrect, and guessing isn’t penalized.
  • Name the deciding requirement before you read the options.
  • Flag time-consuming questions and come back to them instead of losing several minutes on one.

Chapter 8: If You Fail, and After You Pass

If you don’t pass

Final results are posted to your AWS Certification Account within five business days. If you fail, AWS requires you to wait 14 calendar days before retaking the exam. There’s no limit on attempts, but you pay the full exam fee each time.

Use the gap to rebuild your plan. Your score report may include a table showing how you performed in each section. AWS advises caution when interpreting section-level feedback, so use it to choose what to review, not as a precise diagnosis.

After you pass

Your certification is valid for 3 years. Before it expires, you can recertify by passing the latest version of the exam, or by earning AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional, which automatically recertifies the Associate certification.

AWS is updating the Professional exam: SAP-C02 can be taken until November 16, 2026, and SAP-C03 is available from November 17, 2026. For the full list of AWS exam updates and dates, see our AWS certifications list (opens in a new tab).

Once you’re certified, AWS also gives you access to a 50% discount voucher for recertification or any other AWS Certification exam. It’s a benefit of being certified, so it doesn’t apply to a retake after a failed attempt.

AWS also says that once you have passed an exam, you can’t retake the same exam for two years. If AWS has updated the exam with a new exam guide and exam series code, you can take the new version.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the SAA-C03 pass rate?

AWS doesn’t publish an official pass rate for SAA-C03. Figures you see online, including “40% fail,” are unverified third-party estimates. See About the “40% fail” figure.

What score do you need to pass SAA-C03?

You need 720 on a scaled score of 100–1,000. Because the score is scaled, 720 doesn’t mean 72% of questions correct. See What a 720 score means.

How many questions can you get wrong and still pass?

There’s no fixed number. The exam has 15 unscored questions you can’t identify, and scores are scaled across exam forms, so AWS doesn’t publish a number of allowed misses. See why “you can miss X questions” doesn’t hold.

Is SAA-C03 still the current exam?

Yes. At our last check (October 8, 2026), SAA-C03 was the current exam, and AWS hadn’t announced a successor or retirement date. The Italian version of the exam will be retired after December 31, 2026.

Is there an SAA-C04 exam?

AWS lists SAA-C03 as the current Solutions Architect – Associate exam. We found no SAA-C04 on AWS’s exam page, in its exam guide or in its September 2026 certification update post (checked October 8, 2026). Pages that describe an SAA-C04 aren’t AWS sources, so check AWS before you rely on them.

What are the SAA-C03 domains and weights?

Design Secure Architectures (30%), Design Resilient Architectures (26%), Design High-Performing Architectures (24%) and Design Cost-Optimized Architectures (20%). See the four domains and their weights.

How long should you study for SAA-C03?

AWS doesn’t set a study time. It recommends at least 1 year of hands-on experience designing on AWS. Our guidance: study until timed, full-length practice scores are consistently comfortable, not for a fixed number of hours.

What practice test score means I’m ready for SAA-C03?

AWS doesn’t publish a practice-score target, and scores from different providers aren’t directly comparable. Our guidance: look for steady results across several sets of questions you haven’t seen, no consistently weak domain, and the ability to explain why each wrong option is wrong. See Know when you’re ready.

Can you pass SAA-C03 without AWS experience?

Experience is recommended, not required. AWS recommends at least 1 year of hands-on experience and suggests that people without IT work experience earn AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner first. AWS also states that all AWS Certifications may be earned without completing specific prerequisites. If you have less experience, add hands-on building to your plan.

What happens if you fail SAA-C03?

You must wait 14 calendar days before retaking it. There’s no limit on attempts, but each attempt costs the full exam fee. Results are posted within five business days. See If you don’t pass.

Is SAA-C03 hard?

It’s demanding because it tests design judgment. AWS’s exam guide says incorrect options are written to be plausible, so you must pick the answer that best meets all the requirements. Our guidance: practicing requirement-based reasoning under timed conditions is the most direct way to prepare for that.

Does the AWS 50% discount apply if I fail?

No. AWS gives the 50% discount voucher to certified individuals, for recertification or another AWS Certification exam. It isn’t a retake discount.

Can I take SAA-C03 online?

Yes. You can take it as an online proctored exam or at a Pearson VUE testing center. If you take it in English as a non-native speaker, you can request a 30-minute extension.
