An AWS certification is worth it when it supports a clear goal and you back it with hands-on practice. It’s worth less if you already have years of AWS work you can show, or if you’re hoping a credential alone will get you hired. This guide helps you decide. It covers who benefits most, what AWS charges, how long a certification lasts, how to check for exam changes, and what to do next whichever way you decide.
The AWS facts below come from AWS’s certification pages and exam-update announcements, checked on October 8, 2026. Advice on whether to certify is EvolveSkill’s guidance and is labeled as such. We don’t quote salary figures, because we couldn’t verify them against a primary source, and AWS doesn’t publish pass rates.
Chapter 1: What an AWS Certification Is, and What It Isn’t
AWS certifications are exams that test AWS skills at several levels. Passing one shows you studied a defined body of knowledge and met AWS’s standard for it. In our view, it doesn’t show that you’ve run production systems, which is why it works best as one signal alongside your experience.
AWS certification levels at a glance
| Level | How AWS describes it | Experience AWS lists | Exam price (AWS list, USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foundational | Validates AWS Cloud and AI fundamental knowledge and core concepts (Cloud Practitioner, AI Practitioner) | No prior experience needed | $100 |
| Associate | Validates core AWS skills (for example Solutions Architect, Developer, Data Engineer, CloudOps Engineer, Machine Learning Engineer) | Prior cloud or IT experience recommended | $150 |
| Professional | Masters advanced AWS architecture and solutions | 2+ years AWS experience required | $300 |
| Specialty | Demonstrates expertise in specific AWS technologies, such as Security | See each exam’s page | $300 |
| Business (beta) | AI Business Strategist: strategic expertise in applying cloud and AI to business outcomes | No technical experience needed | Beta exam; see AWS |
Prices are AWS list prices in US dollars for one exam attempt, checked on October 8, 2026. Taxes may apply. AWS says it updates exam prices at least once a year, in May, for currency changes, so confirm the current price on AWS’s testing policies page before you book.
Chapter 2: Who It Helps, and Who It Doesn’t
This chapter is EvolveSkill’s guidance, not AWS data. Use it to test your own situation.
When it’s most likely worth it
- You’re new to cloud and want a structured path. AWS designed the Cloud Practitioner exam for candidates new to the cloud who may not have an IT background.
- You work in IT and want to move toward cloud, operations, development or data work. A certification gives you a defined syllabus and a way to show you’ve covered the fundamentals for that role.
- A role or employer you’re targeting names a specific AWS certification. If a job description asks for it, the case is simple.
- You learn better with a deadline. A booked exam turns “someday” into a plan.
When it’s less likely to pay off
- You already have several years of hands-on AWS work you can show. Projects, references and interview answers may carry more weight than another exam.
- You expect the certificate to replace experience. It doesn’t. See Chapter 5.
- You’re collecting certifications without a goal. Each one costs exam fees and study time, and each expires after three years.
- You can’t make time to practice hands-on. Studying only to pass can leave you with a credential but few skills you can use.
Chapter 3: What It Costs and How Long It Lasts
The exam fee depends on the level (see the table in Chapter 1). Beyond the fee, count your study time and any prep materials. If you don’t pass, AWS requires a 14-day wait before you can retake the exam, and you pay the full fee for each attempt (see AWS’s after-testing policy).
How long a certification lasts
AWS certifications are valid for three years. Before one expires, you can renew it or, for many certifications, maintain it.
| Option | What it does | What AWS requires |
|---|---|---|
| Renew by retaking the exam | Extends validity by 3 years | Pass the current version of the exam |
| Renew with a higher-level exam | Extends validity by 3 years | Pass a qualifying higher-level exam that AWS lists for your certification. For example, AWS lists Solutions Architect – Professional as a renewal option for Solutions Architect – Associate |
| Maintain on AWS Skill Builder | Extends validity by 1 year | Hold an active certification within 90 days of expiration and an active AWS Skill Builder subscription. AWS offers this option for many certifications |
Options vary by certification, so check yours on AWS’s recertification page.
Chapter 4: Check for Exam Changes Before You Book
AWS updates its exams from time to time, and it has announced updates to several of them, including one retirement. This matters for one practical reason: if you’re studying for an exam that is changing, make sure you’re preparing for the version you’ll actually sit.
AWS says that when it updates an exam, existing credentials remain active through their original expiration date (AWS announcement, September 1, 2026). For a retiring exam such as Advanced Networking – Specialty, AWS says certifications earned before retirement stay active for the standard three-year period. For the exams that are changing now, with AWS’s dates, see our AWS certifications list (opens in a new tab).
Exam versions change often, so confirm the current version on AWS’s certification page before you book or buy study materials.
Chapter 5: What a Certification Shows, and What It Doesn’t
This chapter is EvolveSkill’s guidance. A certification answers the question “Has this person studied AWS properly?” It doesn’t answer “Can this person design, build and fix things?” You close that gap with evidence of your own:
- Build one or two small projects on AWS, and write down what you built and why you chose each service.
- Practice scenario questions, not only definitions. Explaining why you picked one option over another is a skill you’ll use in interviews and on the job.
- Put the certification next to the projects on your CV, not in place of them.
Check AWS’s current free-tier terms before you build, so you don’t pay for services you leave running.
Chapter 6: What to Do After You Decide
If you’ve decided a certification is worth it, pick a level that matches your experience, not the most impressive title. Ask yourself these questions in order:
- What role or goal am I certifying for? If you can’t name one, decide that first.
- How much AWS or IT experience do I have? With little or none, AWS positions Cloud Practitioner for newcomers. With some cloud or IT experience, look at the Associate exam closest to your role. AWS lists 2+ years of AWS experience for Professional exams.
- Can I build something while I study? If not, plan the time before you book.
- What will it cost in total? Add the exam fee, study time and the chance of a retake. See Chapter 3.
- Is my target exam changing soon? See Chapter 4.
For a fuller walk-through of choosing your first exam by background, see our guide on which AWS certification to start with (opens in a new tab).
If your answer is the Solutions Architect – Associate exam, our guide to why people fail SAA-C03 and how to pass it (opens in a new tab) explains how the exam is scored and how to build a study plan. For other roles, start from that role’s Associate exam page on AWS.
If a certification isn’t your next step
This is EvolveSkill’s guidance. Deciding not to certify yet is a reasonable outcome, and you can still make progress:
- Build and document one or two small projects first (Chapter 5). They are the evidence a certificate can’t give.
- Look at the job descriptions for the roles you want. If none of them name an AWS certification, put your time into skills and projects.
- Come back to the decision when a goal appears. A certification is worth the most when it answers a question someone is already asking.
Next Steps
- Name the role or goal you would certify for (Chapter 2).
- Check the exam fee and renewal terms against your budget (Chapter 3).
- Confirm your exam’s current version, then choose your level (Chapter 4 and Chapter 6).
- Once you have chosen an exam, plan how to study for it: our AWS exam preparation guide (opens in a new tab) covers building a study plan, using practice questions and deciding when you are ready to book.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is AWS certification worth it?
It can be, if you have a clear goal and will build hands-on skills alongside it. It’s less useful if you already have several years of AWS work you can show, or if you expect a certificate to replace experience. See Chapter 2 to test your own situation.
Is AWS certification worth it if I have no IT experience?
It can be a useful starting point. AWS designed the Cloud Practitioner exam for candidates new to the cloud who may not have an IT background, and it lists up to six months of AWS exposure as possible but not required. AWS also says all AWS Certifications may be earned without completing specific prerequisites, although it recommends experience for each exam. It won’t replace practical skills, so pair it with small projects.
How much does an AWS certification exam cost?
AWS’s list prices, as checked on October 8, 2026, are $100 for Foundational, $150 for Associate, $300 for Professional and $300 for Specialty exams, in US dollars per attempt. Taxes may apply. If you don’t pass, you wait 14 days and pay the full fee to retake.
Is AWS certification free?
The exams aren’t free. AWS does offer many free digital courses through AWS Skill Builder, and it sells subscriptions for more exam-preparation resources. Check AWS’s training pages for what is currently free.
How long is an AWS certification valid, and how do I renew it?
AWS certifications are valid for three years. You can renew by passing the current exam or a qualifying higher-level exam, and many certifications can be maintained for one more year through AWS Skill Builder. See How long a certification lasts.
Which AWS certification should I start with?
It depends on your experience and goal. AWS positions Cloud Practitioner for people new to cloud and recommends prior cloud or IT experience for Associate exams. The questions in Chapter 6 help you choose, and the guide linked there goes deeper.
Will an AWS certification get me a job?
No certification can promise that. It can show you’ve studied AWS to AWS’s standard, but employers also look at what you’ve built and done. Treat it as one part of your evidence, with projects alongside it.
What happens to my certification when AWS updates the exam?
AWS says existing credentials remain active through their original expiration date when it updates an exam (AWS announcement, September 1, 2026). For a retiring exam such as Advanced Networking – Specialty, certifications earned before retirement stay active for the standard three-year period. See Chapter 4.
How long does it take to prepare for an AWS certification?
AWS doesn’t publish preparation times. It depends on the level, your experience and how much hands-on practice you do. Plan around readiness, such as how consistently you handle practice questions and projects, rather than a fixed number of weeks.
